People

Marking focuses on the ordinary and sometimes extraordinary lives of those Hudson Valley residents who made a difference in their community. In most cases, we are Marking people who have been forgotten over the passage of time.

Places

Marking highlights places that impacted people and communities in the past. From community centers, family homes, general stores and places of worship to deserted hamlets, memories of these familiar local places are fading away…

Land

From tracing history through property title deeds and maps to considering usage and the environmental impact, land has been a priority and a source of friction but primarily a valued commodity for natives and settlers of the historic Hudson River Valley.

Water

Marking centers not only on the majestic Hudson River but also on the water sources for the many mills and farms in our local history. Water has been and is the lifeblood of our region. Marking honors its history.

Stones

“Every stone of the soil has a language and a voice, as it speaks to me of struggles past and gone”

Excerpt: Burton Coon’s poem “The End of the Trail” written after a walk over his farm in Milan, NY on August 30, 1933.

From stone pillars at the start of a walk, to stone walls marking the trail and stone markers to celebrate history and a life well-lived, it is fitting for Marking the Moment to progress from People to Places to Land to Water to Stones.
