Land Research: Schultz to Astor

Map:

The undated map from the Astor Collection likely dates to the early 20th century and includes the names of the landowners who sold to Astor. Much of the land shown on the map is open fields and forested areas as shown in the photo taken in 2021. We can imagine it was similar in the past with periods where it was much more forested.

One of the farm owners included is Mrs. Walter TenBroeck (Helen Ursula Schultz), the great granddaughter of Christian Otto Schultz, a Palatine settler who arrived in America on the Ship “Hope” on the 23rd of September 1734.

Insurance Policy:

Helen Schultz purchased an insurance policy for the property on the 25th of August 1862. The inventory of property includes the “dwelling house, a barn, old furniture and apparel”. The mention of ‘old furniture’ makes one wonder how old. Perhaps not as old as when her great grandparents and grandfather Jacob lived there?

Interview:

The page from Benjamin Schultz III’s scrapbook documents his research in 1958 and is of particular value because it provides Mr. Wilkins’ memories. The anecdote at the bottom of the page depicts the human element in the transfer of property. It can only be imagined that these landowners, many whose families had been on the same land for generations had mixed feelings about the sale. If they were alive now, they may be pleased to see that much of the land remains undeveloped and is beautifully maintained.
